Split PDF by Barcode

Split a scanned batch into separate documents wherever a barcode or QR code appears, and name each file from the barcode value.

Every page is scanned for QR codes, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec, Code 128, Code 39, EAN/UPC and ITF barcodes. A new document starts wherever your rule says: at every barcode, when the barcode value changes, or only when it matches a pattern such as your separator sheets or invoice numbers. Separator sheets can be removed from the output, and each document is named from its barcode.

Before splitting, the page view shows every detected barcode, where each document starts and ends, and which pages need a second look - a separator whose barcode could not be read, or a page with several different barcodes. You can insert or remove splits, mark separators, and edit filenames, then download each document or a ZIP with a split log.

Simple workflow

How it works

  1. 1

    Add a scanned batch

Add one or more scanned PDFs and choose how barcodes should split them.

  2. 2

    Scan & review

Check the detected barcodes and document boundaries, and fix any split by hand.

  3. 3

    Split

Download each document named from its barcode, or a ZIP with a split log.

Frequently asked questions

Which split rule should I use?

Use "Split on every barcode" when each document has exactly one barcode on its first page, or separator sheets between documents. Use "Split when value changes" when every page carries the document ID. Use "Split on matching pattern" when pages also contain other barcodes, such as product codes, that must not start a new document.

What happens if a barcode can't be read?

The page keeps the previous document, so nothing is lost, but a page that looks like a separator sheet with no readable barcode is flagged for review. In the page view you can insert the split by hand. For faxes and poor scans, turn on "Enhance scans" or raise the scan resolution.

How do I make large batches faster?

Draw a scan region around where the barcode sits so only that part of each page is read, and turn off the barcode types you don't use. Both make scanning much faster and avoid reading unrelated barcodes.
