DocForensic

PDF Table to Excel

Detect tables in a PDF - bordered or borderless, with merged cells and multi-page continuations - and export to Excel or CSV.

This tool detects tables using ruling-line and whitespace-alignment analysis (not OCR-based table detection), reconstructs merged/spanned cells, picks out header rows, and can merge a table that continues across a page break into one logical table. It does not run OCR - a scanned page with no text layer is flagged and skipped rather than guessed at. It only reads the file; nothing is changed.

Simple workflow

How it works

  1. 1

    Add PDFs

Add one or more PDFs to the list.

  2. 2

    Detect

Detect tables in a file and review each one, verifying low-confidence or complex tables against the original page.

  3. 3

    Download

Download an Excel workbook (one sheet per table) or CSV files.

Frequently asked questions

Does this OCR scanned tables?

No. A page with no extractable text layer is flagged and skipped, not guessed at through OCR.

Are merged/spanned cells preserved?

Column spans (a header cell spanning several columns) are reliably detected. Row spans (a cell spanning several rows) are reconstructed on bordered tables using a best-effort heuristic and may not be caught on every layout - a borderless table has no such signal to check at all.

What if the auto-detector misses a table?

Use the manual region override in Settings to name the page and the approximate area (as percentages of the page) - extraction re-runs scoped to just that region.
