PDF Bookmark Editor

Edit a PDF's bookmarks - rename, reorder, restyle and retarget them, fix broken links, import or export the outline.

Open a PDF and its bookmark tree appears beside the page. Rename bookmarks in place, drag them to reorder or nest them, change their level, and move a bookmark's destination by dragging its pin on the page. Bookmarks can be bold, italic or coloured, open or closed, and can point to a page, a named destination or a web address.

Bulk tools shift every page number at once, find and replace in titles, sort, tidy titles and remove bookmarks by pattern. Outlines can be imported from text, JSON, a pdftk dump or another PDF, and exported the same ways. Broken, out-of-order, duplicate and empty bookmarks are flagged before you save, and only the outline changes - the rest of the file is untouched.

Simple workflow

How it works

  1. 1

    Add a PDF

Add one or more PDFs - with bookmarks to edit, or without, to build an outline.

  2. 2

    Edit the outline

Rename, reorder, retarget and restyle bookmarks, or import an outline. Every change is marked for review.

  3. 3

    Save bookmarks

Download the PDF with its new outline, plus an outline export and a change report if you want them.

Frequently asked questions

My front matter changed and every bookmark is off by two pages - can I fix that at once?

Yes. Use Bulk Operations > Shift page numbers with +2 or -2, optionally for a page range only. You'll see how many bookmarks are affected, and any that would fall outside the document, before anything changes.

Does editing bookmarks change anything else in my PDF?

No. Only the outline is rewritten. Pages, text, images, forms, links and metadata stay exactly as they were, and the saved file is checked to make sure.

Some bookmarks are marked "preserved" - what does that mean?

They use an action the editor can't change, such as a script or a structure destination. You can still rename and move them, and their action is kept exactly as it was when you save.
