Grayscale Toner Saver

Convert a PDF to true grayscale so it prints with black toner only, and use less ink with lighter fills, no backgrounds and lighter images - while keeping text readable.

Many printers print "gray" that is stored in colour using all their colour toners. This tool converts every colour in the document - text, shapes, images, gradients and spot colours - to true grayscale, so it prints with black toner only, and black text becomes pure black instead of a four-colour mix.

Optional toner-saving treatments lighten large filled areas, remove page backgrounds and watermarks, lighten photos and thin heavy rules. Every page shows a before-and-after preview with the ink saving measured on the real separations, and pages where text contrast drops or chart colours become indistinguishable are flagged before you convert.

Simple workflow

How it works

  1. 1

    Add PDFs

Each page is analyzed: already gray, gray stored as colour, or colour - with its ink before and after.

  2. 2

    Choose a mode

Grayscale only, Toner saver, Draft or Max saver - or set each treatment, and skip or change any page.

  3. 3

    Save toner

Download the grayscale PDF and a savings report with the measured ink per page.

Frequently asked questions

My document already looks gray - why convert it?

Gray that is stored as a colour (RGB or CMYK) is often printed with a mix of colour toners. True grayscale content prints with black toner only, and black text stored as RGB becomes pure black instead of a rich four-colour black.

How is the toner saving measured?

Each page is rendered into its ink separations before and after converting, and the ink on each plate is measured - the same method Ink Coverage Calculator uses. It measures the PDF's content; printers and drivers apply their own colour handling, so real toner use varies.

Will text stay readable?

Text is kept at full black by default, and the contrast between text and what's behind it is checked after converting. Pages that fall below the minimum contrast are fixed automatically or flagged, and charts whose colours turn into the same gray are flagged too.

Can I keep some pages in colour?

Yes - skip any page, convert only a range or only colour pages, or give a page its own mode (for example plain grayscale on a figure page and full toner saving elsewhere).
